Warm and Mellow Tones for Fall.....Green Spice
October is a great month to plant or to refresh pots on your patio or deck.
You don’t even have to ‘be out in the garden’, to bring the feeling of the garden indoors. View a beautiful container thru the patio door or pass one near your front door and you are still ‘in the garden’.

This month Swansons is featuring an excellent selection of containers, plants and seasonal accessories for putting together outstanding planter combinations.

Come visit our Container Gardening area where our helpful staff will assist you in selecting great plants for that special location. We also have a selection of ready to go planters that are perfect for a housewarming gift or for a special occasion.

Fall is one of the best times of year to plant new plants in the garden or to refresh pots and favorite containers with exciting and different plants for fall and winter.

Heuchera ‘Peach Flambe’

Here are some outstanding choices from our perennial department to enliven your fall gardening experience. Besides those listed below, we carry an excellent selection of other superb perennials for fall and winter. Also see our Shrub and Tree area for some classic as well as unusual evergreen shrubs to make your containers real conversation pieces.

Our knowledgeable staff is here to help you put together a composition for your favorite pot or browse our container selection and we’ll design a pot perfect for you for any location in the garden. Enjoy the warm, mellow tones of fall with some of our favorite staff picks for containers:

Heuchera ‘Peach Flambe’ (right)
An ever changing evergreen foliage display of ruby pinks, peaches and deep apricots. You don’t ever need flowers to get real satisfaction from this new introduction from Terra Nova nurseries in Portland.

Heuchera ‘Crème Brule’Heuchera ‘Crème Brule’ (left)
Good enough to eat, the pure apricot and tawny terracotta shades blend together in perfect balance. Evergreen thru winter.
Carex testacea or Orange SedgeMuehlenbergia complexa or Wire Vine
This black stemmed trailing accent from New Zealand with button-shaped, olive green leaves is the ideal compliment to broader leafed plants and thin spiky grasses.
Carex testacea or Orange Sedge (right)
Not a particularly new plant, but one that always is on our list for Fall interest. Olive green foliage turns a brilliant orange as weather cools, making a fantastic cascading accent at the edge of a pot.

If plums and purples, with chatreuse and gold is more to your liking, try some of these favorites:
Heuchera ‘Plum Pudding’
Evergreen plum foliage overlaid with streaks of iridescent silver. Ruffled edges add an old fashioned flare.
Heuchera ‘Green Spice’(lower right)
Evergreen foliage of minty green striated with dramatic plum veining that intensifies as weather cools. The patterning of the plum color is a great companion and a highlight to other purple foliage plants.
Heuchera ‘Green Spice’Ceanothus ‘Diamond Heights’
Brilliant chartreuse evergreen leaves with bold, dark green markings down their center. Excellent paired with the forest greens of shrubby Euonymous, Boxwood or Japanese Holly or plums and burgundy.
Carex ‘Evergold’ (up-right)
A long standing performer with spiraling masses of long gold variegated foliage that shines in the grey overcast days of winter.
Bergenia ‘Bressingham Ruby’
We just can’t get enough good bold foliage plants for winter interest. This winner is green in summer, turning a luscious burgundy as cooler weather increases. Nothing like to balance grasses, small leaved shrubs and perennials.
