Seminars & Events for May 2008

Every Friday
9:15am - Master Ikebana artist, Megumi Schacher
, teaches an approximately 90 minute, ongoing class every Friday morning. Sogetsu Ikebana uses local materials in an accessible style that is appropriate in any setting. Megumi provides all the plant material you will need to create a beautiful arrangement for your home. Participants must call Megumi at (425) 744-9751 by the Tuesday before their first class to reserve a place and ensure materials will be available for them. Class fee: $25 per session.

Saturday, May 3 - 5pm - Warm Weather Veggies - Delicious, and beautiful with vibrant colors and fantastical shapes, warm weather veggies are a joy to look at as well as to eat. They need warm soil, and do not take kindly to chilly nights. Now is the time to start planting them out and to plan the feasts you'll have in July and August - fresh buttery corn, snappy beans, curly squash, luscious eggplants, glossy chili peppers, sweet, juicy tomatoes. Candy will share valuable tips gathered from her extensive experience of growing, preparing, and eating these fabulous veggies.

Saturdays, May 17th, May 24th and May 31st - 5pm - Gardening 101, 102, 103 - Swanson's Meghan Fuller has the experience and enthusiasm to help and inspire new gardeners. These three classes are an expanded version of Meghan's popular Gardening 101 class and cover everything you need to know to create a thriving garden. You don't need to have gardened for years to be successful, but you do need to understand some basics. People are welcome to attend just one or all three.
- May 17th - Gardening 101 will cover important gardening terms; soil, including how to do your own simple soil tests; and mulch.
- May 24th - Gardening 102 Light, plant selection, planting, and watering.
- May 31st - Gardening 103 will cover year-round care of your garden, fertilizing, and pruning.

Saturday, June 7th - 10am - Great Plant Picks - Alex LaVilla, Swansons Perennials Manager, Chairs the Great Plant Picks Selection Committee for Perennials. In this class Alex will take you on a virtual journey through the tests and trials of the Great Plant Picks selection process and introduce those chosen for their exceptional qualities as garden specimens in your garden.

Sunday, June 8th - 4pm - Tropical Look-Alike Plants - The vibrant colors and lush foliage of tropical plants offer a beguiling challenge for the Puget Sound gardener. Swanson's Ben Mark will show hardy look-alike plants that will help you create a tropical garden paradise that is at home in the Northwest.

Saturday, June 14 - 10am - Container Design - Swansons Meghan Fuller demonstrates designing and planting containers for year-round interest.
Learn to create pots that will perform happily, making strong statements in your garden, on your patio or at your entry. The containers, soils, planting, fertilizing, and on-going care are discussed, as well as design and plant selection. A fun introduction to container design!

Sunday, June 22nd - 2pm - Container Design - Carrie Becker, garden designer , co-founder of the Bellevue Botanical Garden Perennial Border and co-author of 'Perennials The Gardener's Reference', changes scale to demonstrate design for a container. Design principles apply whatever the scale and the choice of plants is even more critical when they are given center stage in a beautiful container.

Saturday, June 28 - Lavender - A long time favorite in Northwest gardens.
There is a bewildering selection, so come to this delightfully scented class and learn about the different characteristics of each variety. We'll talk about soils, watering, and pruning, and we'll have fun sharing recipes, and talking about the many ways this wonderful plant has been used throughout its rich history.
Sunday, June 29 - 10am - Xeriscaping or dry landscaping, is the art of landscaping with plants that, once established, require less water than the more traditional plants grown in NW gardens. While typically used in climates that are hotter and drier than the Pacific NW, climate change is causing us to consider xeriscaping as a rewarding gardening practice. The advantages to practicing xeriscaping are numerous. Swansons Ben Mark shares both his experience of gardening with these methods, and his wide knowledge of drought tolerant plants from all over the world, that are appropriate for use in xeriscaping.

Saturday, July 12th ­ 10am Summer Pruning Japanese Maples. Dan Gilchrist shows examples and demonstrates how to prune these beautiful trees to highlight their natural growth patterns and enhance their graceful form.

Saturday July 19th ­ 10am - Garden Design for Small Spaces - Urban Gardens, Patios and Balconies ­ The famed garden design team of Withey and Price share their experience and design talent. Every inch of a small garden space is valuable; Glenn and Charles will show how to select the right plants for maximum value in confined quarters. Glenn Withey and Charles Price are garden designers and also Curators of the Dunn Garden in Seattle.

Saturday July 19th - Sunday July 27th - 9am - 6pm daily Art in the Garden 2008 - Join Pratt Fine Arts Center and Swansons Nursery as we celebrate summer in the garden. Stroll through Swansons five acres of lush park-like displays and enjoy beautiful works of local hand-blown glass, forged ironwork, and functional art for your garden.

Saturday, July 26th, 10 am - Sedum Workshop - plant an out-door table center or garden feature using the sculptural beauty of sedum. Swansons Ben Mark will demonstrate and help you create your own. Tuition is free, pay for the materials and container you use. Call 206 782-2543 to reserve your place in this fun workshop.

Sunday, July 27th ­ 3pm ­ Container Design with Glenn Withey and Charles Price. Planting a container focuses attention on the plants and their relationship with each other and their pot, all of which requires skill, and a strong sense of design. Learn essential points of design and plant selection from this well respected team of garden designers, and leave with the confidence to create your own stunning container. Glenn Withey and Charles Price are garden designers and also Curators of the Dunn Garden in Seattle.
